The Wrong Bros live up to their name....

Considering the team is called The Wrong Bros, what could possibly go wrong 48 hours before launch?

  • The pilot being admitted to hospital?
  • The transport company realising that the lorry they have (the biggest one you can drive on UK roads wiithout a police escort) is too small?
  • The gold bikinis that you had to get from the states getting stuck in Wales?
  • The girls that you have to go in the bikinis getting hit by a mystery bug & dropping out like flies?
  • The Princess Leia slave girl outfit which was beautifully made by Max at www.maxkane.net being left on a bus & taking a trip to Ponders End...by itself..
  • Realising that maybe wheels would be a good idea....

Surely not?

Good job there is always a plan B....ermmmm....

Anyone got a spare pilot/crane/gold bikinis/girls to go in gold bikinis/a map to Ponders End/any wheels?....

Dear All

The Bad Habit took some time out of their busy holy work three weeks ago to build the blessed flying wings, don’t panic there still was plenty of drinkin’, smokin’ and just dam right naughtiness from the habits.

There will be more footage of the NUNS day out coming soon so keep watching,

Why would you want to look at a big polystyrene plane when the Wrong Brothers team are so damned good at throwing press do's instead?!?

In honour of our latest TV coverage we hosted an exclusive photo shoot in the heart of the Clerkenwell Deathstar, everyone who’s anyone was there, the Jedi Council, Solo, Chewbacca, Leia, even that ponce Fett turned up and tried to blast everything in sight!

ScAirBus Big Build - Live From Birmingham City Centre

May 21, 2008 - 10:05 AM
Posted by ICBM - Intercontinental Ballistic Morons in Construction | Making Some Noise

This Saturday (May 24th 2008) the ICBM Red Bull Flugtag team is descending onto Chamberlain Squarelocated in the Birmingham city centre to put weeks of scrounging through skips and blagging the odd nut and bolt to good use.  ScAirBus will come to life right in front of…well…anyone who cares to watch an interesting rendition of Scrap heap Challenge!! All in all we are looking forward to having a great time spreading Red Bull Flugtag fever in the West Midlands.  We plan on drilling the first screw in at 10am, wrapping up at about 5pm (then to the pub for some Red Bull Simply Cola and dark rum).

While we are scratching our heads whilst trying to attach our two 3.5 meter wings to the fuselage, and having the odd fall out (because Will says it won’t work), we will have a crew of volunteers collecting spare change in support of the West Midlands County Air Ambulance at the same time.  Our one short flight will be in honour of the Pilots and Crews who continue to save lives all over the West Midlands and the monies raised will be a thank you for their efforts; helping to keep them flying.

So if you are in the Birmingham area on the weekend (or don’t have any plans; Birmingham has some awesome shopping) we would love to have you stop by, maybe chat over a can of Red Bull and give us some moral support.  If you can’t make it but would like to say hi or would like more details, check out the Intercontinental Ballistic Morons group on Facebook and leave a post on our wall.

A Big Hello From Team ICarus

May 19, 2008 - 02:27 PM
Posted by ICarus Airkix in Construction

Dear Fellow Flugtaggers,

I would like to introduce you to team ICarus. We are a group of students from Imperial College who decided to enter the Flugtag. This does give us quite a bit advantage, uni (where we're manufacturing) is based 5mins from Hyde Park, in fact we were able to use Hyde Park to do some testing of a model we made. One of the videos below is us testing our model (the basic design without the arty creative bit that will get us lots of points :D). Before we get onto how we have been progressing, we thought it would be best to introduce you to each of our team members.

Meet Pilot Dave, the one and enough to sit with all of our carefully crafted flying machine surrounding him where if one thing snaps he will be the first point of contact. :S The main reason he got the Pilot seat is being the lightest of the team, maybe this will encourage him to eat more. :P Dave also happens to be from Northern Ireland, a possible source of his madness and why he is willing to attempt flight, troubled childhood.

Next is Army Private Andrew, a member of the OTC in London who likes nothing more than dressing up in the uniform, polishing his boots and heading out for dinner followed by lots of alcohol. In fact we aren't expecting to see Andrew back manufacturing tomorrow due to an expected heavy night tonight.

The third member is Action Man Dave, the only one of our team with any real practical experience in manufacturing. There is an air of mystery surrounding Dave regarding where this experience comes from. Various rumours have surfaced of the past three years but none have been confirmed, all Dave says is that he can't tell us.

The fourth member of the team is Alex. We have several fears regarding Alex as over the past week or so of manufacturing he has shown a worrying fascination with Dave's (Action Man) backside. On one occassion we let him loose with the camera Red Bull gave and he spent a solid 3mins zooming in and out of Dave's rear end. There are also a few worrying photographs that we shall show to you all soon.

The final member of our team is Liz. Liz the one who shall be giving us our creative edge, with a keen hand on a sewing machine and an eye for art. Liz is really our secret weapon, while the rest of us make sure we fly (we're hoping to break the flugtag record) Liz will be giving us that vital edge towards the 40 points.

As you can see we are quite a mix of crazy students. Worse photos do exist on facebook of each person but I think for now this will do. We may make a few videos to introduce ourselves a bit better. :D

As for ICarus, our basic manufacturing has been coming along nicely. Below is a video of our flight test that shows why we are confident we will fly. The model is 1:5 scale. Anyways, enjoy the video. :D

We have spent quite a few days this week manufacturing. Here is a video of a typical day in the life of Team ICarus. I shall upload more soon on our progress.

Good luck fellow flugtagers and we hope you are all either enjoying the competition or getting on well with your manufacturing. We look forward to meeting you all the competition. We are hoping to organise an after flugtag party at the college union that people will be welcome to come to. We just need to confirm it all first. :D

Good Luck,
Team ICarus.

Extreme-Accountants' update on The Risk Calculator

May 19, 2008 - 12:50 PM
Posted by Extreme Accountants in Construction

So, you've met the team. Now to update you on the build. We had a great weekend this weekend when we all met up at a warehouse near Leeds for some filming. We may not look very advanced with our build but we're quietly confident and it's gonna look awesum once we add some colour. We're a little sceptical at this point about how far it will actually fly, but if we drink enough Red Bull beforehand, it can only improve our chances.

Turns out we probably could have done with a smaller pilot (we're thinking jockey size) but Marc seems pretty confident he'll be the buffest accountant on the day! In fact, he seems confident he can land on the grass at the other side of the Surpentine which he even committed to on camera. Anyone fancy a wager?

So here's some pics of what we've done so far, courtesy of the E-A team. You'll see we even took a test run, although Andrew had to position himself very carefully as we haven't fixed the wings yet. Didn't want him to damage his assets!

Oh, and please ignore the office chair. Although we're used to this kind of fine furniture at work, we have decided to go with something else on the day. The Risk Calculator is built for speed, not comfort, that's for sure...

That's it for now. Carry on building everyone...

After our 4th weekend of work, the Cock of The North finaly gets (it's) head!

It's not really as big as it looks . . . it's bigger!

  The cock gets head
Next week is all about re-fastening the legs on, and wrapping the cock in fur!

Am I right in thinking that distance is measured from the ramp, to whatever hits the water first? don't any of you boys with proper flying machines let your trollies plop into the water at the end of the ramp, 'cause however far your craft flies, your trolley will only go 3 meters - and you'll get the same distance as us (in fact,we'll be happy with 4 meter!).

Really looking forward to meeting everyone.  If anyone has a good deal on accomodation for the Friday, could you drom me a mail: andy_kershaw99@hotmail.com

Over & out.

I will shortly upload pictures of our team and the incredibly sexy Alice in Wonderland!

The pictures are still showing quite a bland undercarriage but we have yet to lay the table so to speak - check back soon to see the transformation......

Hi Everyone!!

Team Gateshead Angels has finally left the pub to begin building their utterly impossible, frabulous, grabulous, zip-zoop-zabulous flying machine! It took us six weeks to design so we've got to cram the entire build into just three weekends. Fortunately, our crack team of boffins has got us off to a "flying" start:

Pondering a severe droopage problem, our man-with-the-plan insists that it's never happended to him before:

Tally ho the lads! From left to right: Liam (Richie), Aidan, Steven (Amos) and yours truly.

Chocks away and happy building to all teams!

Hi guys

Just wanted to give you an update on our build.

After a great weekend, we've managed to complete our welding, get our legs on and get the wheels on.  The legs are moving as planned  - but a little faster than anticipated: even at walking pace!

Anyway, we're happy with progress - even if it looks nothing like a cock! . . .yet!

Making Progress

May 7, 2008 - 01:16 AM
Posted by Pharoh's Phantasy in Construction

Oh my!  Everyone's video blogs are all very entertaining, I'm actually a little embarrassed to put ours on here now!  I think I'll have to go away and do a bit more filming to liven things up a bit!

But, despite our lack of video footage, we are getting on well.  Admittedly I got very disheartened the other day when trying to carve the sphinx, but, I gave up, then came back to it today and it went far better!

I'm curious, how many other people have never done anything like this, ever, at all, including building stuff?  Cos I'm looking at other people's work, and they all seem to know what they're doing, although I'm hoping this is just an illusion and you're all just as confused as I am!

But, although my pictures are a little embarrassing, I'm quite sure that by the time I finish my sphinx, it'll look quite respectable, albeit a little weird!  My dad's wings are coming on great though, he's getting on really well!

Here's a couple of very 'work-in-progress' sphinx pictures (he's laying on his side in the photo, the leg kept falling off so we had to turn him over!), I'll post some wings ones soon, then you'll all be scared!!

Bye for now,

For all the Mary Poppins fans out there!

April 30, 2008 - 07:09 PM
Posted by Mary Poppins Fan Club in Construction
So we thought it was about time the MP crew said a few words about how things are going,

Well so far we’ve all been quite busy; we’ve made a facebook group ( The Mary Poppins Fan Club) which we are slowly building up a  nice little fan base for the lil lady with the umbrella,  one enthusiastic little helper  (Scott) spent a whole 8 hours creating a brilliant scale model of the flying machine, made out of cocktail umbrellas and straws, I think you can appreciate why it took so long. (check facebook for pictures of the masterpiece). The Mary Poppins wanna-be himself and pilot to the Magic Umbrella, Bobby, has made a brilliant start to building the craft, and it is looking extremely good! (again pictures are on facebook) but still unlikely to fly..... We’ve recruited a Disney fan (Charlie) to teach the penguins (Kurt ,Jorgen) and the chimney sweep(Mike) a few dance moves to our anthem ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’  to get the crowd going and finally we’ve also got a personal stylist (Jo) who is working on getting the penguin suits , the dress and the bloomers to make 4 beer bellied men become Mrs Mary Poppins and her dancing Penguins! (good luck Jo!).... so all is going quite well in the world of Mary Poppins.

We’ve been doing some research and noticed that all the other flying machine for the event (all 40) have wings except mine (take a look out the window next time you fly on holiday and I think boeing know about this secret too!!!!) so I'm not expecting a very long flight, but a stylish one .So I am going more for the performance vote and the creativity not the length (That’s Bobby's Moto!!!). We’re soon going to start doing some test flights which will ofcourse be disasterous and hilarous so we will be sure to film them and put them on facebook for your pleasure.

So that’s our current progression, we’ve been looking at some of the others developments, and to be quite honest we’re a tad intimidated but what the hell.... bring it on!

See you all there

News from the Hanger

April 28, 2008 - 05:27 PM
Posted by The Crop Dusters in Construction

Ok two weekends into the build..what a crew we have: Richard on a rugby tour last weekend..now needs a weekend sailing to recover. Karl has now been sent back into hanger by his good wife after escaping down a pot hole last week.."I'm going to die down here" was heard last thursday from hole in Somerset

Tim, I'm the test pilot not a fxxxx builder is keen to help with the build!! when he is not dropping hot glue down his shorts and asking how high is the drop off ramp...(I'm suggesting that its been moved up to 9 meters)

Since I managed to find the project a home at Kemble Airfield, Lavina & Matt (LAW aviation) are ensuring that that we a) don't hit any real aircraft in the hanger b) we don't set any aircraft on fire c) we all stay off the main runway (Tim!!). They have also been training us re: aviation talk....Beer "oclock" is the latest tech term which required us to head for AV8 (good food & beer) using close formation flying lead by Matt

Lavina is trying to keep her red bull drinking under control (only 10 a day now) but blames the drink problem on trying to keep us under control and away from those spinning things...what does she call them..."props" I think.I put it down to F1 racing results and trying to find Matt's old hire cars (ops another deer, ditch etc)

Just waiting to hear about some transport support to London otherwise we will be leaving shortly and carrying the flying beast up to Hyde Park via the M4

Overall the build is going to plan...drinking, drinking, cream cakes, lunch and oh yes wood...

If anyone finds Richard please send him back to the hanger as we are currently a three man (sorry boy) team..

Greeting from Pharaoh's Phantasy!

April 25, 2008 - 06:27 PM
Posted by Pharoh's Phantasy in Construction

Hello!  Well, although we have started doing our video blogs, we haven't actually managed to upload them onto here yet, so hopefully I'll have that done within the next couple of days.  So, for now, here's how we're going...

Our team captain, Colin (my dad) has been working his a**e off making the wings of our flying sphinx and I think it's looking great!  I have no idea of aerodynamics or anything, but he seems to have a pretty good idea what he's doing and it all looks very professional, so I'm just putting my faith in that!

I am supposed to be working on creating the actual sphinx itself.  As yet, I haven't got very far, but, I have a massive block of polystyrene in the garage which I spent a long time staring at the other day trying to figure out the best way to sculpt it into something vaguely representing a sphinx... I am however still thinking!  Sunday will be the day when it all starts coming to life though, I need to get moving and I'm convinced it'll all fall into place when I get started!

The other 2 members of our team, Ade and Dom, are really going to be more the 'braun' of the team (as in, they are going to be the pushers of the sphinx on the day!), although, to look at them you certainly wouldn't think so!  Ade's been helping looking up materials on the internet and a few other bits and pieces, and Dom is yet to get started, a slight kick may be needed there!  He assures me he'll get working soon, although I can't talk!

So, that's it for now, I'm sure as the weeks progress, the flying sphinx will too.  We will keep you all posted!

Debbie.

Hello world from Team Badger Badger Badger Badger!

Just thought we’d better introduce ourselves and the Giant Flying Techno Badger! So, who the hell are we? Well:

Team Badger Badger Badger Badger

From left to Right... Al, 'len, Sadler and Pez Captain Helen ‘ ‘len’ Crook – Pilot, lunatic, frustrated artist with an unhealthy obsession for badgers and giant blue stuffed cats (a long story…)

Alex ‘Big Al’ Davis – the only one who knows a bit about engineering and has as dad who’s an engineer! *Phew!* Hopefully we won’t all die instantaneously upon hitting the ramp then! Musician extraordinaire and a lovely boyfriend (say Capt ‘len)

Chris ‘Sadler’ Sadler (not sure if that one works really…) – drugs worker and counsellor, nomad and happy wanderer. His dream job is a farmer… not of badgers mind!

Chris ‘Pez’ Perry – top top barrister and legal type. Ninja blagger and his mum had a stable in which we can build the badger, under the watchful gaze of two real life red bulls (highland cattle so they really are red!!!)

Our very own red bull!

We're going to be building the badger in Bromsgrove, Worcs so keep your eyes peeled for updates!

To follow our progress, check out our website Giant Flying Techno Badger Blog and if you want to show us some love, join our lovely Facebook group

Anyway, ciao for now
