Aarrhh me flugtaggers!

Where do I start? The past month or so has been kaos, so I apologise for not keeping you all updated. Sadly we lost a team member a few weeks ago so we had to fight off a long queue of people wanting to replace him. I will post a new team photo with our new recruit in a couple of days.

UMTV came out to film us, which was a good laugh. They brought a smoke machine with them and we had to dress in our ghostbusters overalls and dance for the camera. It will be aired on one of the ITV channels a week after the event, so I warn you now we are all fleeing elephants.

The build itself is coming along nicely with just a few minor details left to do like windows. We will be ready for spraying after this weekend, giving us two weeks to work on the glider.

WHO YA GONNA CALL!

Update From ICarus - We Meet Airkix

May 21, 2008 - 02:03 PM
Posted by ICarus Airkix in uncategorized

Hello Fellow flugtaggers,

It has been a long time since you have heard from ICarus. As we are students we had a minor issue of 3 weeks of exams to negotiate before we could get back stuck into our build. Last Wednesday we finished our exams and a lot has happened since then including us now being able to work full time (that's right 9-5 mon-fri on our build) :D.

On Thursday of last week we were invited up to Milton Keynes to meet Airkix. They had decided that they thought they could help us by teaching us to fly. As you can see from the video we still have a lot to learn in terms of our own flying ability but it was definitely a great experience. ICarus is now officially know as ICarus Airkix thanks to the support that Airkix has shown us. We are trying to organise a bit of a trip for our supporters to come with us and try out the Airkix experience at a bit of a discount. Will let you know more details when this is organised.

Anyways onto the video, as you can see we definitely had the grin factor but none of us are all that good. There are a few things to watch out for though. The first flyer is Alex who had a pretty good first flight and the bit at the end where you get flown up high is pretty sweet. Next we have Andrews second flight in which he actually managed to learn how to control the height he was flying at, we were all impressed. Next is David Mac's second flight in which things started going well and he was rising until he got scared and ... (it's worth the unexpected :D). It was out pilot Dave's turn next and clearly his flying skills need a lot of work if we are going to go far in the flugtag. Finally we have Liz who also had a pretty good second flight. Also included at the end is some footage of our instructor showing how it's meant to be done. :D As a team we would definitely recommend giving it a go.

Then on Friday we had the TV Crew with us which was a great experience although we did have to go for a few different takes to get things right. :D

As I said we are now working fulltime and I will have more videos and photos of our progress coming shortly. We also have our own TShirts made and will be getting more done in the near future. :D

 Keep building and supporting hard,

ICarus Airkix,

Was the reply from our ‘chief engineer’ Bob  - a friend of a friend who got an A+ in his CDT GCSE - when he found out that we wanted him to construct a fruit stall that transforms into a flying machine.

“Does it have to fly?” he continued. Just a splash will be fine with us Bob. Just get on with it.

E4' EVEL'S BLOG UPDATE

May 14, 2008 - 11:02 AM
Posted by THE 'E4' EVEL KNIEVEL TEAM in uncategorized

Hello again all you E4 fans and FLUGTAG lovers.

Well with just over 3 weeks left until Flugtag 2008  it is still full steam ahead .Im glad to say our mothership, the Rocket cycle is now complete and ready to soar across the lake.(Very Optimistic!)

Now we are attempting to build our so called Evel’ Wings. Which will hopefully give me enough lift to ‘at least’ clear the lake and beyond.

We still need your help though , the E4 EVEL Team is slipping down the scale in the voting stakes on the Redbull website. So don’t delay check us out and click on the vote for this team and kick the competition into touch.(No offence guys!)  We have super treats in store for our fans. Not just visually but our machines have a few hidden ‘effects’ to hopefully wow the 80,000 crowd. Also our pre-jump event will include an amazing death defying leap!   (well maybe not in the slightest death defying ) but we do intend to finish the Job Evel started back in London way back at the old Wembley Stadium, in 1975.We will in our Pre-Jump time, sort of Jump 13’ Buses as Evel Knievel attempted, ending unfortunately with him in hospital with a broken Pelvis!

Not revealing to much but lets say our attempt is er , ‘Not To Scale’.

We must take this opportunity to personally thank, Kelly Knievel and all Evel’s Family who allowed us to use Evels likeness and allowing us to use all his ‘cool’ stuff. Thanks guys! However, as the day approaches im thinking I wish he were here to jump in my place!

As a treat to all, we have arranged to show the E4’ Rocket Skycycle In a ‘River Thames Jumping Pose’ to the world on Sunday 25th May by Londons ‘Putney Wharf Tower’ during The Wandsworth Arts Festival. And I shall be there testing the rocket engine , before they remove it for Flugtag ! (spoil sports) So come along and meet me and the gang. Fellow competitors especially welcome to come along and, ‘Kick Tyres’ and ‘She aint’ gonna fly mate! ‘ us as much as they like! Putney Wharf Tower is in located in Brewhouse Lane SW15.

So keep your votes coming, check back in soon and I really hope to see you all either at Putney or hear you screaming at Flugtag.Enjoy our Art’y not so give away pix!

Stop the press, any areo-nautical engineers or anyone with the slightest clue of Free Flight please contact me, help us OBI-ONE-KENOBI we are running out of ideas fast!!!!!

Until then ‘HAPPY LANDINGS’  from Phil ‘Hollywood’ Hatton (aka EVEL KNIEVEL)

And The E4’ EVEL KNIEVEL TEAM.

Pharaoh's Phantasy is taking shape!

May 14, 2008 - 12:12 AM
Posted by Pharoh's Phantasy in uncategorized

So, the time seems to be going by very quickly indeed, and I for one am stressing.  We're not doing too badly, but there's still loads to do and not much time to get it done in!  I thought I'd post a few pics of our progression so far, just so you can see what you're up against!  Plus we made the local papers today (Evening Echo, Southend) with an almost full page on our FlugTag entry, so that's all good!  Ok, photos...

The sphinx is taking shape.  Polly, our dog, likes to hinder our progression by wanting to play frisby all the time!

The wings are looking good.  They're gradually being covered with some heat sensitive plastic that shrinks to fit (I'm not good with this technical stuff ok!).  Plus the tail plane is coming along nicely.  Ade has now started joining in the 'fun' too!

It turns out that papier macheing is actually the most boring pass time ever!  This took 2 of us over 3 hours, it felt so much longer!

Finally, our newspaper page.  Sorry it's a bit small, I can't seem to figure out how to make the images bigger!

Ok, that's it for now!

So here we are putting together Foxy's head. Despite the glorious weather this weekend and so far this week we have laboured long and hard in our workshop, shunning the cries of our families to spend the weekend with them we started to put together the Fox.

With Rob Hudson away on his hols, it was up to the rest of the team, so 3 cheers to Emma, Chris, Rob (the other one), Phil and Me (Kate).

Here's a couple of pictures of the production and one of the official team snack of an icecream and raspberry sauce filled Yorkshire Pud

ScAirBus...Biting Back

Ok, So we might be sitting in 38th place according to the poll, but that doesn't mean we won't fight back.  Actually we plan to BITE back!!!

Below is the toothy grin of ScAirBus, who has recently told me that it would like to sink it's teeth into the following:

  • Cheesey Bread (or Loaf)
  • BBQ Bird (Vulture seems to be his favorite, but he will settle for some Cock O The North or Royal Swan),
  • Fried Badger
  • Turtle and Ginger Soup
  • Extreme Triffle (for Dessert)!

He also mentioned something about doing the same to a Blonde Bimbo, but I don't think for the same reason as the previously mentioned menu!!!

More new on how our build is going in the next couple of days...

Hello from The Vampire Flyers,

Just a quick hello and update from us!

My laptop is out of use I think the stress of the flugtag has made it self destruct!

We're waiting on some welding but while that's been going on we've almost got the bad head finished (I say bat but it looks a little bit more like a mean greyhound!)

We have almost got the special (suprise) effects done too! It's all moving on nicely!

Not long to go EEK!!

Less chaff Whitox. You've talked the talk.

It's now time to walk the walk.

It's 6.45 am on Saturday the 10th May 2008.

The Wolf is already up and on the project, securing a huge sponsorship deal with Sainsburys PLC. Yes as many cardboard boxes as he can carry. fantastic.

This weekends plan is to complete the cake, add wheels and a pushing bar. Paint it pink and add varnish.

Red Bull Flugtag - The Longest Flight

May 6, 2008 - 11:10 AM
Posted by David in uncategorized

Hi Flugtaggers

I now either risk a few drop outs of this year's Red Bull Flugtag or, what I stronly hope, encourage you to work even harder on your designs.

Because what you are about to see is the longest flight by a Red Bull Flugtag team so far.

Can you believe, the record was set in Austria (yeah, the little country in the heart of Europe, where they have the EURO) in 2000 and the distance was a mind- blowing 195ft or 59.4 meters!!!

The video is in Austro-German, but what they are literally talking about is moving the security boats because they didn't want to hurt anybody....looks the team knew they will fly far...

We can now either throw the towel and get hammered during the weekend or we make sure that the Austrians had long enough the honour of setting the record!

I count on you!!!!

David

Problem solved!!!

Hi Flugtaggers

Good news on a sunny Thusday!!!!

The video problems should now be fixed!

FLV videos (FLASH format) and Windows Media Files should now work fine!!!

So no more excuses for not using our video cameras ;)

Additionally, do some of you have a BEBO account (www.bebo.com)?

Maybe we could also use bebo for the videos?

What you think?

Great video footage by the way. Brightens my morning every day =)

Best regards

Two weeks into the build and we have managed to to constuct the carcus of the Ghostbusters car. We are now concentrating on the panel work using mounting board and papier mache. Still tryng to get hold of the wheels though. Apart from that happy with the progress.

 . . . then, may I introduce 'The Cock Of The North!' . . . .

 Hi guys

As Flugtag seasoned vetrans (we 'flew' the Pink Flamingo into 5th place in 2002) - we've somewhat rested back on our collective Lorals in our smoking jackets and spent our time sipping fine port, and nibbling on ripe stilton.   Safe in the knowledge that we've built a flying machine before.

On seeing this board, and taking a cursory glance at the calander, we realised that our apathy was somewhat misplaced, and in a sense of panic - dusted off the welding equipment.

Given that 'Red Bull give's you wings, we've dispensed of the ones that we'd planned to attach, thus bringing us back on track with our build plan.

Given the fierce level of competition this year, we've decided to keep our design largely under wraps.  The sceptics amongst you may be inclined to believe that it's because we haven't got a clue what we're doing . . . far from it!  It's also that NASA have asked us not to disclose this prototyped technology.

We have a very dark picture of the craft so far - the pylon that you would see you  was result of a days worth of welding (and the associated burns that come with that!) - It is actually the neck of the craft - there are strict guidelines with regard to wing span, wheel base, weight - but no (clear) restrictions on height . . . we've gone for height! - I'll try and establish how I add a pic!

Looking forward to seeing all the crafts progress - and can't wait for the pre-flugtag party, and the day itself.  If it's half as good as 2002, we're all in for a fantastic time!

. . . and remember - if you're wife wants a baby: come and see the Cock of The North!

Not the world's best blagger, possibly the worst.

Couldn't even talk the local newsagent out of charging me 25p to put a Wanted poster in the window, in a plea for a Pin Stripe suit for The Doctor.

That is poor.

Our applogies, Doctor..When asked what we thought our chances were, we actually said, 'well, we've not got THE craziest machine, theres a Flying Toilet and a Tardis among others..tsk tsk, the press, what can you do??

So, who's managed to blag the most free stuff so far? Fear we're severley lagging behind in this particular field, but very interested to know who are the BIGGEST blaggers to date..

Here we are at work (supposedly) from left to right we hav Bernie - our proud pilot, Neil - our technical and planning wizard, Kirk - our captain to keep us in line and Tim.....well he's just Tim really!

More interesting news and stuff to follow in later blog entries. We just thought we'd get something on here in the meantime now that us norfolk folk have discovered that wonderful internet thing.

Hello from Swansea and Team 'Tally Ho!', the team building Foxy, the Flying Fox!

We've got off to a slow start, but we're motoring now, and we've managed to get a HQ to build Foxy for free [big thanks Aled!!], so things are really gonna get moving now!!

We've been nagging the local media to get us known, and theres a feature in the South Wales Evening Post today [www.thisisswansea.co.uk - enter Tally Ho in search and you'll find it - thanks Rich], and the local radio station The Wave [serving south a west Wales 96.4FM best radio station in Wales - Sation bosses, are you reading this? Free advertising on the worldwide web - you know you want to sponsor us don't you, ha ha! ] Big big thanks to DJ's Siany and Claire Scott for supporting the cause.

We've also set up a group on facebook [Team Tally Ho (Foxy) Red Bull Flugtag] anyone can join or just come along and have a nose at whats going on.

We've got a blindin' vid to upload for you all once we sort the glitches out, it'll be worth the wait, trust us!!

Don't know how all you other teams are doing, but we have to admit Swansea businesses aren't the most blagger-freindly in the country - a special mention to a certain member of Swansea City Council, possibly the most miserable sod in the world! - 'no you can't have anything - if you have an accident you might sue us.' - but we shall overcome!

And all you Swansea folk out there reading this - have you applied for your tickets yet? No? Why not? We want those Swansea-Paddington trains filled with Foxy supporters come 7th June!! If we win, we'll give £50 to the best banner supporting Team Tally Ho! [if we can find you in the crowd afterwards!]

Can't wait to see you all on the day, it;s gonna be awesome!!

Love Phil, Emma, Rob n Rob [and a big mention to Kate too!]

PS: Big shout out to Swansea City FC - Champions!!!

Therefore the Vulture and the Wolf have been tasked with baking the bottom layer of the cake this weekend.

The Vulture is a clueless baffoon so don't expect much progress.

Bugger. I've just crash landed my TARDIS in North Leeds and am now having to rebuild the thing out of MDF and  Polystyrene in some plumbers garage. Apparently it's then gonna need a kick start off a big ramp in order to make it back into space. Meanwhile, Captain Jack has  set up a website www.flyingtardis.com where you can keep track on the reconstruction.

There is some good news though, Donna Noble didn't survive the impact, well she would have done if I'd not kept the door locked, so a vacany is now open for a glamorous assistant. Rose?

Intercontinental goes International

What do you do when work gets in the way of your ability to promote and support your Flugtag Team? You promote your team and the event where ever you might be. Vas, one of the ICBM Ground Crew members has a job that cant keep him in the UK right now, so he has decided to tell the world about our ScAirBus whilst on the road.

Below Vas is seen on the Singapore Flyer (yes SINGAPORE!!) studying up for the big day.  It's too bad that his tool belt is not being used for it's intended purpose...helping the rest of us build ScAirBus!!! I'm sure he will make up for it in other ways.

To find out where Vas is going to pop up next, check out the Intercontinental Ballistic Morons group on Facebook. (Note to the promoters:  He will be with us on June 7th, we promise!!!).

Where to stay....

ScAirBus - The Story

April 12, 2008 - 06:03 PM
Posted by ICBM - Intercontinental Ballistic Morons in uncategorized

Whilst walking through the woods one beautiful Saturday afternoon in June, Jeremy "Jam" Hartley, Will Eaton and Mohammed "Vas" Vaseem (the three and only current members of ICBM) stumbled across an old, rusty, red double decker London Bus. As they statred to clean away at the grime covering the windows so they could have a peek inside, a large cloud of smoke started to pour out from the exhaust pipe sourrounding both the boys and the bus in front of them.  When the cloud finally settled and disapated, a genie was stood in front of them.

The genie started to talk "Do you know I have been a genie for the past 4000 years and I am sick and tired of people finding out where I live, doing a bit of a clean job for me and waking me up??? What does a guy have to do to get some peace around here" he bellowed.

After about five minutes of ranting and raving about how hard it was to find a home without people rubbing it and interupting his precious sleep, he granted the three boys one wish between the lot of them."After all! That's what genies do" he stated followed by an evil laugh.

The three only had to think for a moment when Jam started to speak "I wish we could have one of those new double decker jetliners..."

The genie interupted with "Your wish is my command", and just as quickly as he appeared, he disappeared into the sky.

When the ICBM trio turned around, they noticed that the old bus that was once standing there...was just the same old bus (although a bit cleaner) with a couple of wings bearing two engines underneath each. "Not quite what we had in mind old genie" Vas said sarcastically."I hope it flys!!".

Little did they know at the time but the genie had cast an evil spell and this AirBus would fly, just not as expected.....

To find out how the story ends, watch this space (or be in Hyde Park on June 7th)!!!

If you want to contact Intercontinental Ballistic Morons, you can do this through our Facebook group.

Left to right: Jeremy "Jam" Hartley; Team Captian and Pilot, Mohammed "Vas" Vaseem and Will Eaton           (our fourth is TBD).

CUSTARD PANIC BUYING

Having done a few calculations we've realised we need 400 litres of premium custard to fill the cockpit so supermarket shelves in the South West may start to run dry...best pop out now if you want any on your on rhubarb crumble tomorrow.

Don't think the rest of you guys have much to fear seeing as we've designed something with the aerodynamic properties of a fridge freezer. But you never know, with a dollop of Angel Delight in the mix it might fly...

Does a lemon float or sink?

This is just one of the many questions we're going to find the answers to.
Will land-loving, fruit stall workers float or sink? is another.
For we are "The Cockney Spirits" a bunch (no pun intended) of bored workers from London, willing to have a go at the Flugtag and put some excitement back into our lives.
"Why a fruit stall?" we hear you ask. Well, while walking the streets, thinking "what would best represent our lovely town?"our ears stumbled upon the idea.
Cries of "two for a pound" "Come and get your luvely pears" and "Feel my juicy plums" filled our heads with joy. At that point we knew nothing else would be more "London" than an East End fruit stall.
So, if you're dying to know the answers to lots of questions regarding oranges, lemons, blackberries, blueberries, mangos, grapefruits oh, and fat cockneys attempting to fly, please watch this space.

Stand by your Van

I suspect I'm not unique with the fact that our flying machine might struggle a flight to London without some sort of assistance from an internal combusition engine - although we are searching for a rip in the fabric of time to get the TARDIS down South.

So, I'm wondering if any one else has started considering the logistics of van hire. Begging letters are going unanswered so maybe people power will help obtain a discount from a national firm.

Shout up if you're in need of van hire, and maybe someone like EasyVan will offer a tasty discount if we all looked to Stelios as a hire choice.

It's an expensive business this flying(!) machine lark, so every little helps!

cheers, Captain Jack  :)

Just to say hey!!

Check out this shiney and new forum, who feels a little bit special? I know I do! This is the closest to celebrity I've got other than rubbing Richard Whitelys' flab (RIP poor sod)

Any hoo, can't wait for the day, although my flying bat looks a little bit like a pile of junk at the mo...ah well it will all come together soon enough!

happy building fellow nutters!

We are very excited here at Flugtag Central to the upcoming event, which is now a mere 57 days away - yes folks that's a little under two months to build your flying machines ready to launch them off the ramp in Hyde Park!

Each team is now fully aware of the challenge ahead and completely pumped to battle it out against each other to not only be crowned champion of Flugtag 2008, but also to make their region proud of what they have achieved!

Good luck, and may the force be with you...
